Leviathan California Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2013

$48

Screaming Eagle winemaker's new red!ee      A great new Napa Red from former Screaming Eagle Winemaker Andy Erickson and vineyard manager Anne Favia, Napa's newest superstar winemaking team.  A fantastic value for such pedigree and quality under $50.  Limited. 94 Points Brix26:  "A dark and devastatingly good red blend that is yet another demonstration of Erickson's impressive skill. You may not be able to resist opening a bottle as soon as it arrives. Expressive aromas of coffee bean, smoke, dusty rose and fresh baked black cherry pie jump from the glass. Soft tannins crescendo to intense flavors of dark chocolate, raspberries and cherries. It finishes long with dark fruit character and mouthwatering acidity. While this wine may age gracefully for years to come it is hard to resist now.  62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Syrah, 13% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot." San Franisco Chronicle: " New Cult Wineries to Watch: Leviathan": "If Andy Erickson is normally low key, he's almost mum about this blend...but for his devotees, it's a chance to access the Screaming Eagle winemaker's talents for under $50 - far less than most of his projects, which also include Hartwell and Arietta...features the joint talents of his wife, Annie Favia, one of Napa Valley top viticulturists."

Tonight to start the Fathers Day weekend off I have opened the 2013 Leviathan California Red Blend. 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Syrah, 24% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc. This is the 10th Anniversary wine from Andy Erickson the former winemaker of Screaming Eagle. The nose is very expressive with notes of black cherry, blackberry jam, boysenberry, black currant, chocolate, pencil shavings, herbs and mint. On the palate there is jammy dark fruit, black cherry, blackberry, blueberry, black currant, allspice, herbs, graphite and earth. This is a full bodied wine with medium + acidity and medium + grippy chewy tannins that lead to a long fruit driven finish. Enjoy your Fathers Day weekend and do it safely. Nostrovia.

A wonderful Boudreaux blend From Napa Valley. Dominant black cherry throughout the journey with hints of cigar cedar box and licorice. Long smooth finish. Definitely worthy of a cellar collectible.

Blackberry jam, sweet wood, black rocks. Dense and vinous. Persistent tannins with a certain level of finesse to them given their intensity.

Make sure you decant at least 2 hours!!! I didn’t heed the advice of others and it came out over oaked with lots of vanilla. First few glasses reminded me of the wines we had in Spain and Portugal, which weren’t bad at all, but not cabs from Napa. After a few hours this turns into a smooth, dusty Cab; which has elegance and power. I’ll buy another and drink properly!
