Larkmead Vineyards Dr. Olmo Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

$179.99

96 Points Parker                                                 Rare new release of Larkmead's rare Reserve Cabernet. 95 Points Antonio Galloni:  "The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Dr. Olmo is holding back quite a bit of its potential. Dark cherry, smoke, licorice, tar and menthol give the Dr. Olmo much of its brooding personality. The tannins are quite firm, but that should be less of an issue as the wine won't be released for about a year." 95 Points Robert Parker: "The “Black Label” wines include the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Dr. Olmo, which is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the clone of Cabernet that is also called Eisele, This wine spent 20 months in 62% new French oak A magnificent wine by any standard of measurement, with notes of scorched earth, lead pencil shavings, charcoal embers, and blackberry and cassis fruit, this dense purple wine has undeniable minerality, a beautiful, full-bodied texture and a voluptuous finish. Drink it over the next 25 years. ... ...As I have written before, this is an extraordinary estate spread out in one contiguous parcel (unusual) in the center of the Napa Valley floor, north of St. Helena and south of Calistoga. Proprietor Cam Baker farms 110 acres, and the Cabernet Sauvignon is the Olmo Clone which became well-known as the Eisele Clone when it was planted in the famous vineyard of that name. A singular characteristic of the Larkmead vineyard is that it has a strong vein of old river gravel. Former winemaker Andy Smith has moved on and has been replaced by Dan Petroski, who has not missed a beat finishing the 2012s and producing the 2013s, which Cam Baker believes might be the vintage of the century for Larkmead."

Haven’t had this in almost three years. I remember this being closed. Still tight but opening. The charred oak smoothing a bit but still toasted cedar. A little more fruit coming out. Really nice. Looking forward to next bottle in three more years!

Very good, but can’t get to 95 - 96 of many other ratings. Beautiful nose. Good structure. Lots of charred oak. Fruit hiding. Drying tannins throughout. Won’t touch other bottles for 3-5 years.
