Kosta Browne Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 2018

$109

Extremely limited Kosta Browne 2018 Russian RIver Valley Pinot Noir. previous vintage 94 Points Jeb Dunnuck: "The Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Russian River Valley comes from a multitude of sites and spent 17 months in 45% new French oak. It's slightly more reticent than the Sonoma Coast and offers more raspberry, ripe cherries, cola, mulled spiced, and earth. Rounded, beautifully textured, and medium to full-bodied, it has a supple, seamless style that's already a joy to drink. Nevertheless, I suspect it will keep for upwards of a decade. 93 Points Robert Parker: "Aged 17 months in 45% new French oak, the pale to medium ruby colored Pinot Noir Russian River Valley opens with broody aromas of spiced cranberry sauce, crushed black cherries, loam, cumin seeds, dried leaves and a classy framing of new oak spice with notions of orange peel and amaro. It's medium-bodied and silky, offering plush, ripe fruits in the mouth, with a grainy frame and mouthwatering freshness, finishing very long. This is a tick up in complexity from the 2016 version. 'We had all our fruit in the week before the fires started, and we were able to get into the winery and everything was fine,' says assistant winemaker Julien Howsepian." Antonio Galloni writes: "I continue to be deeply impressed by what I am seeing at Kosta Browne. Under the leadership of Managing Director Scott Becker and Winemaker Nico Cueva, Kosta Browne has confidently entered the second generation of its life. Becker is the rare entrepreneur who has strategic vision but who understands the practical elements of running a business and also has a huge passion for wine, while Cueva has the imagination and leeway to keep the wines contemporary and relevant. Open top wood fermenters and concrete are increasingly present, as is the practice of using some whole clusters. Perhaps most importantly, Kosta Browne is one of the few California wineries that has the resources and long-term plan to secure fruit sources by continuing to acquire vineyards."

Very nice Sonoma Pinot; well reviewed and well regarded. For the price, though, I was expecting more. In fact, I am ever so slightly disappointed, given the hype. Not as complex and beguiling as Marcassin. Other Pinots all over California compare favorably, at half the price. I bought two bottles, so let’s see if this improves with a bit more age. Had the 2018 vintage with Christmas duck, duck, goose (Cantonese roast duck and Peking Duck from Hop Woo and house roasted goose—mmmm!).

In my opinion one of the best RRV from them. Reminds me of 04. Packed with black cherries, dr. Pepper like spice, touch of oak. Well balanced with no holes, long finish . Very approachable at this young age. Excellent

Good Pinot Noir but not worth its high price. Simple Pinot Noir that is well made but not complex.

California Pinot Noir is always a bit thin compared to those from Oregon.

Young but had to try. Good but certainly would be better with time.

Ruby coloration. Some transparency when held to light. On the nose, cranberry, raspberry and florals. On the palate, medium body, nice lush mouthfeel, plum, cranberry, cherry tobacco and vanilla in the finish, which is lengthy. A wine with some depth for sure.
