New release The owners of the famous Kanzler Vineyard (sourced by Kosta Browne) also make their own small-production Pinot. Get the new vintage before the ratings come out. 94 Points Wine Spectator: "Ripe, with deliciously succulent waves of plum, boysenberry and mulberry fruit rolling through, laced with iris and hibiscus notes and ending with light anise and apple wood hints on the finish. Packs a nice finishing kick of fruit at the end, too, while keeping a racy edge. Best from 2024 through 2032." The Kanzler Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast is a superb expression of the vineyard and the appellation. The wine is characterized by ripe dark cherry, plum, and black raspberry fruit layered upon earthy undertones. The wine is well structured, with the lush fruit balanced by firm but soft tannins with notes of chocolate, cinnamon toast, allspice and fragrances of rose petal, lavender and a hint of citrus on the nose. Extremely small-production From the Winery: We hand-pick and hand-sort (twice) all our Pinot Noir grapes before placing them in plastic bins or stainless-steel fermentation tanks. After a 4-5 day cold soak, we gently heat the must to initiate fermentation. On most lots we allow indigenous yeasts to do the work. With some whole-cluster lots we use commercial yeast to bring out fruit flavors and temper the possible green notes that come with whole-cluster inclusion. One to two times each day, we punch down the cap. As the wine nears completion, we taper down the punch down routine and taste daily to see when the wine has the proper structure to be pressed. Some wines are pressed almost immediately when they finish fermentation; others are left on the skins for several days. We gently basket-press the must, keeping the press wine and free-run wine separate. Then, we select barrels to best complement each lot. Kanzler Vineyards uses 100% French Oak. The 2020 Pinot Noir was barrel aged for 14 months on lees, with 29% new oak and 8% whole cluster inclusion, then blended to stainless steel tanks for an additional month of integration before bottling. The finished wine was bottled un-fined and unfiltered.
