Kale Wines Kick Ranch Vineyards Home Run Cuvée Grenache Blend 2013

$48.99

Kale Anderson is the winemaker at Pahlmeyer and his new red under his own label is stunning.  A newcomer to discover now. The Kale 2013 Kick Ranch Home Run Cuvee is a fantastic blend of 70% Syrah and 30%  Grenache and one of the best red discoveries of the year for us.  Dark in color, tehg aromas brood just below threshhold.  They unfold suddenly into dried tobacco leaf, plum and asphalt.  With time, the aromas evolve to anise, cardamom and become more savory in nature.  White pepper, blackberry compote and candied citrus peel are revealed in the mouth-watering mid-palette.  The flavors culminate in tanned leather, tar and dark chocolate through the finish. Delicious now but can age another 10 years easily.  Highly recommended.

Served with tobacco and coffee roasted pork tenderloin, amarena cherry gastrique and celery root mashed potatoes. Great dark fruit in the wine.

The 2010 Esprit de Beaucastel from Tablas Creek was a tough act to follow, but this elegant Rhône blend from Sonoma just did that. The nose was quite similar with aroma of blue fruits and earthy elements with hint of violet, it was the palate that set it apart: soft, complex and deep, with great texture and beautiful acidity that adds the tension. Elegant and seamless. Kale Anderson was the long time wine maker at Pahlmeyer, and Kale wines are all vineyard-specific. Worth seeking out.
