K Vintners The Hidden Northridge Vineyard Syrah 2016

95 Points - limited                                                     Limited new release from Washington State's K Vintners! 99 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Flirting with perfection, the 2016 Syrah The Hidden is a classic example of the old saying “an iron fist in a velvet glove.” Beautiful notes of dark fruits, damp earth, iron, and crushed rocks as well as ground pepper all emerge from this full-bodied effort that has no hard edges, a terrific mid-palate, sweet tannins, and a finish that goes on for over a minute. It’s a brilliant, brilliant Syrah and one of the wines of the vintage... ...This is another formidable lineup from Charles Smith and Brennon Leighton, who have recently moved their winemaking facility from Walla Walla to just outside of Seattle. All of the pure Bordeaux variety blends/releases have been moved to the Wine of Substance label (also reviewed in this report), and the K Vintners label is reserved for Rhône variety releases. By and large, these are all not destemmed and brought mostly in neutral puncheons. As I’ve said in the past, these are the real deal and are brilliant wines."

Deep Ruby with purple hues, aromas of dark fruits, licorice, spice, floral and herb pepper. On the palate flavors of ripe juicy blackberry and plum with of smoky oak. Well balanced, nice mouthfeel, soft tannins, long finish ending with mineral notes and a spicy smoky oak character. Very nice!

Fuc....... Open next bottle after 2022 and see if it's all come together. A bit disjointed, but seems like better than classic iron fist/velvet glove.

Had higher expectations for this, but think it can get there with some time. Floral nose and rich red and black fruit on the palate. Tannins well integrated for something so young. Medium acidity. I dont think this has more than a decade on it, but 2-3 more years with a 5 year drinking window. Is my best guess.
