Justin Vineyards & Winery Isosceles Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2012

$74.99

The Isosceles Cabernet blend is one of Paso Robles most sought-after wines!  Get the limited new release now. The Justin 2012 Isosceles is bright with a deep ruby core, lighter with a bit of garnet toward the rim. Rich and aromatic with dark fruit of black cherry, cassis, exotic licorice, cinnamon, and subtle vanilla spice with sweet notes of tobacco, a little cocoa and subtle toasted cedar in the background. Full bodied with black cherry and classic black currant fruit, complex brown spice of star anise, licorice with cocoa and herbal notes of sweet tobacco and a hint of eucalyptus. The rest is classic Bordeaux cabernet sauvignon - fruit, complex spice, and mineral flavors balanced with guiding structural elements on a long, memorable finish. Drink on release or wait a dozen years, this one will be ready for you. Blend: 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, 7% Merlot ISOSCELES is the embodiment of our dream to produce a Paso Robles wine in the style of the classic chateaux of the Médoc area of Bordeaux. Each vintage of ISOSCELES drinks beautifully upon release, revealing its Paso roots, and after years in the cellar it shows the quality, complexity, and age-worthiness of the wines after which it is styled. Elegantly understated, but with impressive complexity on further examination, the new packaging for this twenty fifth vintage of ISOSCELES reflects the character of this iconic wine and continues its proud heritage.

From taste: Smoky cassis and blueberry fruit, tobacco leaf and watermelon jolly rancher, some clove and incense. Rich and heady nose. Palate is ultra fruity, sateen and candied but still with some restrained coolness. Not much acidity and obviously modified, and a weak midpalate. Sweet finale, some alcohol warmth, little complexity and a medium at best finish. Very lackluster to me, and $117 a bottle is a robbery.

Look, isosceles is a good wine. The structure is phenomenal, from the tannins to the acid to flavor profile. But a friend uttered a single word that sort of sums up this wine: engineered. It feels like a wine specifically built to check off every box on a wine survey. Does this make it wrong? Of course not. But it still feels like it’s lacking in soul.

Huge fruit, but acid to balance and tannins so polished it brings this puppy to the razors edge of ready to pair with food and ready to drink by itself - and is perfect either way. The only problem here is it is too perfect. The wrong kind of perfect. The scientifically assembled in all the right ways where it seems the only possible way to get there was through manipulation kind of perfect. This is the FairLife milk of the wine world. Scientifically and relentlessly measured, analyzed and assembled to be exactly what Robert Parker likes to drink. Just like too many of today's highly rated wines. That said: an enjoyable experience and one that justinifies it's pricetag.
