Joseph Phelps Vineyards Insignia Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2015

$256

100 points - new release                                                                      Limited new release of Joseph Phelps' legendary Insignia Cabernet. 100 Points Robert Parker:  "A barrel sample blended of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Malbec coming from six vineyards and reared in 100% new French oak, the 2015 Insignia Proprietary Red Wine has a very deep inky-purple color and nose of crushed red and black currants, blackberry pie and plums with hints of dried herbs, sandalwood, spice box and underbrush. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers a knock-out core of intense, energetic fruit with chewy tannins and a lively backbone, finishing with epic length and freshness. 12,500 cases are expected to be bottled." 96 Points James Suckling: "Optimum, even ripening for Insignia designated blocks was acheived by careful vineyard management throughout the growing season. Grapes were held separate during picking, sorting and fermentation. The 2015 Insignia is densely hued with rich dark fruit, cocoa powder and fragrant dried flower notes. Velvety texture and weight on the palate with layers of juicy black plum, Madagascar vanilla and bergamot. Bold, creamy and supple with integrated tannin structure and a lengthy finish." Cellar Selection." Joseph Phelps’ flagship wine, which they have been making for 36 years, is the Insignia, which boasts a remarkable track record. Phelps, always a visionary, was the first to recognize that a blend of grapes could be better than a single varietal cuvee. Phelps produces a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Backus Vineyard situated on the eastern slopes of the Oakville Corridor overlooking Screaming Eagle and Rudd Estate.

Absolutely gorgeous in every way. We were inspired by @Shawn R. Beautiful detail and delineation, coupled with bold dark fruits, and subtle oak treatment. Finishes with coffee notes and sage - stunning.

WS rated this 91 - criminal! We think this rocks, and it’s structured for long-term cellaring. Beautiful whiff of tobacco, meat, spice-box and oak on the nose. Deftly balanced palate displays black briar fruits and polished tannins. Prominent minerality is balanced by just the right amount of acid. Yummy now, but is destined to further improve.

The nose shows nice blue floral fruits. Ripe; blackberries, dark sweet & slightly sour cherries, creamy black raspberries, strawberries and soft plum. Limestone, volcanic minerals, light vanilla, fruit tea, soft, understated fresh tobacco, caramel, milk chocolate and fresh bright red and blue flowers. The body is medium full. Tannins soft and tarry. Ripe; blackberries, dark cherries, creamy black raspberries, strawberries and soft plum. Limestone, volcanic minerals, crushed dry rock powder, soft dark spice, light vanilla, fruit tea, soft, understated fresh tobacco, used leather, wood shavings, caramel, milk chocolate and fresh bright red and blue flowers. The acidity is beautiful. The finish has to flush out but, it’s long, balanced and delicious. This will be a great Insignia. I’ll wait 15 years plus before I open my first bottle. Photos of; their Estate vines of their terrace, terrace tasting area, more Insignia artwork from the visitor center and their signage as you walk to their Napa facility.

New Release showing very young and juicy. Will require lots of time in the cellar, so when you get it, bury it in the cellar for a decade plus...unless curiosity wins! Will join the pantheon of great vintages of Insignia.

Time to taste the 2015 still in barrel. On the nose, it's deep dark cassis with lots of baking spices, spice and dark, fresh floral bouquet. The body is full and ripe. Rich & ripe; blackberries, huckleberries, boysenberries, cream black raspberries, caramel, milk chocolate and lots of baking spices. Tobacco, some graphite, violets, dark florals, crushed dry rocks, gritty volcanic minerals, anise, dark, soft spice, whiff of pepper, good round acidity and a well polished fruity dry tannin finish. It's will develop nicely in 15 plus years.

The 15 vintage is still in barrel and will be for awhile longer. On the nose, bright, fragrant field of wild flowers, black licorice, cinnamon, vanilla, ruby fruits of; blackberries, blueberries, dark cherries, cherries, strawberries and dark loamy soils. On the palate; bright, fresh, ripe fruits that mirror the nose, nice deep spices, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, vanilla, tobacco, graphite, soft leather, dry crushed rocks, edgy volcanic minerals and pronounced dusty/crumbly tannin structure. The long finish has beautiful ripe fruits with good structure, balance, acidity with a touch of strawberry cola. Photos are the other large old oak fermentation vats inside their estate and another perspective of their awesome terrace view. Notice on the label...no Merlot? The decided to rip up and replant their Merlot vines.

Magnum, paired nicely with BBQ Meat Entree. Along with Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red & Bevan Ontogeny; great Napa Valley versions of Bordeaux Blends. Cheers

This was perfection. Decanted for at least four hours. My favorite of 2020 thus far. Enjoyed with amazing wagyu Tomahawk ribeye. Will wait to open the next one. Just tremendous.
