Joseph Phelps Vineyards Insignia Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2013 (1500ml)

$429.99

Rare Magnums of Joseph Phelps new 2013 Insignia Cabernet.  *PRE-ORDER NOW FOR SEPTEMBER 1ST RELEASE* (all pre-orders will ship the first week of September, 2016). This is for a MAGNUM (1.5L) bottle.100 Points Robert Parker:  "The flagship wine of the estate in reds is their Insignia, which has been one of the great Bordeaux blends made in California since the debut vintage in 1974. It usually has 30+ years aging potential, even in lighter vintages, of which the 2012, 2013 and 2014 are decidedly not. The 2013 Proprietary Red Insignia was scheduled for bottling after my visit. A blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest smaller proportions of Petit Verdot, Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc, this is a smaller cuvée of about 12,300 cases. This could turn out even better than the 2012, although the final judgment will have to take place from bottle. An amazing, inky purple color offers up notes of pen ink, white flowers, blueberry and blackberry liqueur. Nicely coiled, its tense, but rich and extracted palate is full-bodied with layers of concentrated fruit, well-integrated wood, acidity and tannin, and a finish of a good 40-45 seconds. This stunner should hit its prime in 5-6 years and last 30-40 years.  The venerable Joseph Phelps Vineyards Napa facility has undergone a complete facelift and renovation."Joseph Phelps’ flagship wine, which they have been making for 36 years, is the Insignia, which boasts a remarkable track record. Phelps, always a visionary, was the first to recognize that a blend of grapes could be better than a single varietal cuvee. Phelps produces a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Backus Vineyard situated on the eastern slopes of the Oakville Corridor overlooking Screaming Eagle and Rudd Estate.

WOTN - I was impressed - besides always being a crowd pleaser this wine always acts like the postman and always delivers 1 hour decant - was not planning to open but we drank the other bottles like thirsty sailors after 90 days on the boat - color has not changed - the smell has gotten even better - the finish was spot on and the taste was impeccable- remarkable- memorable- a true stunner - blue fruits dancing with black and reds fruits - tobacco cassis sweetness from caramel- tamed but striking how this baby keeps growing - drink now if you want but I will not try again for 5 years or more - this Napa cult classic will last 10 years plus and seems to find a way to get better - bravo

WNH rides again - this wine keeps getting better - incredible wine - the dark fruit and amazing color are prefect - but the taste is powerful but beyond approachable- extremely smooth / and the finish speaks in loud Dolby brilliant sounds - just so damn long The herd had our party at Bookers Guesthouse / thank you Eric, Lauren and Glenn.

A friend opened and unlike the Dunn, not my style. Well made, but too rich and dense and tried a bit too hard like a laugh track comedy. Dark fruit, blackberry and a touch of herbalness. Needed more time than we gave it.

Weston hosted Friday group today and was it definitely a can’t miss tasting. Wow! Absolutely knocked it out of the park with heavy hitter after heavy hitter. Similar to Wednesday group, all wines are tasted blind. I’ve been fortunate to have the ‘12, ‘13 and ‘14 all within two weeks. While I think the ‘12 has been my favorite, this was close. Not sure of the merlot usage here, but it was fairly soft and plush. Ripe blueberries and blackberries but also some tobacco and grilled meats. A few people wondered if this wine could be a Cali Syrah (in comparison to the last 2).

Super dark cassis, expresso roast, black tea, big tannins and very good acidity. Dark rich moist black soil, crushed dry rocks, leather, anise, milk & dark chocolate. Great balance, length, structure. This wine is a 30-50 year wine.

On the nose, lightly candied styled fruits of; dark cherries, blackberries, blueberries, cherries and pomegranate. Cinnamon, vanilla, light loamy soils and fresh dry dark florals. On the palate, dry M+ tannins & black currants. Round, full, rich and juicy fruits of; blackberries, dark cherries, cherries, blueberries and strawberries. Dry crushed rocks, gritty volcanic minerals, leather graphite, tobacco leaf and ash, light; cinnamon, clove & nutmeg, spice-box. The long finish shows softer, dusty tannins. It's also showing some good bottle evolution since I had it last Spring. As well, the structure, texture, length & finish are improved. Photos of their beautiful wood wall storage cabinet in the main dining room and another perspective of the terrace view.
