Intense minerality, lots of fresh squeezed citrus, green melon, pear skin, quince and butter cookie with some floral gardenia notes. Minerality carries to the palate with a little of the white gummy bear thing I get from Kistler. I was always under the impression this was a butter bomb, but not at all. Well balanced and great acidity.

Recent vintages of this wine have been all sunny daffodils, but the 2013 is tinged with brimstone and steel, lemon peel, cypress, a whiff of wild thyme. Clear-complected with texture like silk voile, the body suggests laurel and lemongrass. The fruit was fermented in a mix of French oak and stainless, and only a portion underwent malolactic. Lots were aged six months in 40 percent new French oak, including two months sur lie with regular bâtonnage. The result is a succulent and stylish Chardonnay that wears its oak well—as a veil, not a mantle—and knows how to behave at the table. 13.7% abv | $30 (sample)

This is the kind of Chardonnay that reminds me why I like the varietal. A beautiful balance and complexity lay at the foundation, and its mix of melon, minerality, and touch of oaky influence is appreciated from start to finish.

Peach and pear on the nose. Very light color, almost Sauvignon Blanc like. Surprisingly little to no oak or butter with key lime, apricot and Granny Smith apple flavors added to the pear and young white peach. Light bodied with a refreshingly citrus finish.
