99 Points - limited Limited new release from Jonata, one of Santa Barbara's most exclusive producers and winemaker Matt Dees. Rare library release! 99 Points Jeb Dunnuck: "Meaning the blood of Syrah, the 2009 Jonata Winery La Sangre de Jonata is aptly named and represents the sheer essence of Syrah. A blend of 98% Syrah and 2% co-fermented Viognier, it’s thrillingly dense and rich, with spectacularly deep, classy aromas of blackberry, charcoal, blood, lavender, and violets that literally soar from the glass. Incredibly concentrated and rich, this hits the palate with a full-bodied, dense, layered texture that partially conceals the massive underlying structure and tannin of the wine. Similarly styled to the ’07, yet possibly even more firm and structured, this is fun to taste at the moment, but not much fun to drink. It desperately needs 5-7 years of bottle age, and given how the ’04 is showing now, will have 2+ decades or more of longevity." Dedicated to expressing a range of red—and a handful of white—wines from its estate in the central coast of California’s Ballard Canyon (Santa Ynez Appellation), Jonata is one of a new breed of producers throughout the world who are thriving with a non-traditional amalgam of varieties and blends. With a commitment in particular to Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Syrah, and informed by cutting edge viticulture, winemaking, the Jonata wines are on the vanguard of an emerging quality movement in California winegrowing.

#AgedWineTuesday Deep purple in color with a short purple rim. Not showing age at all. Nose of black currants, cooked plums, oak, tobacco, licorice, earth, cocoa, spices, tar and wild flowers. Full bodied and bold with medium acidity. Dry and fruity on the palate with blackberries, black currants, plums, dried figs, tobacco, chocolates, coffee, peppercorn, licorice and eucalyptus. Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy raspberries. This is a very tasty Syrah from Santa Ynez Valley in California. Still young, but already delicious. Spicy, entertaining and very yummy. Good right out of the bottle and better after 2 hours of airtime, and will probably be even better the next day. Had it blind and could not believe that it's a 12 year old. Will continue to age nicely in the next 10 years. Robert Parker 94 points. Thank you Scott for sharing this with me. A blend of Syrah with 1% Viognier. 15.5% alcohol by volume. 92 points. $100.
