Inglenook Rubicon Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2013

$165

Formerly Rubicon Estates,  Francis Ford Coppola reacquired the rights to the "Inglenook" namesake in 2011 and has now restored the original name of this historic Napa Valley estate, founded in 1879, and is working to bring its reputation for high-quality Napa Valley wine out of retirement. To that end, Coppola brought in winemaker Philippe Bascaules, from Chateau Margaux. The Rubicon name remains the moniker of the signature estate wine. 94 Points Antonio Galloni (Vinous):  "Scorched earth, graphite, smoke, lavender, plums and blueberry jam race across the palate in the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Rubicon. A big, dramatic wine, the 2013 is endowed with explosive energy to burn. Orange peel, flowers, mint and sweet spices give the 2013 an extra kick of lift to balance the sheer opulence of the fruit. The French oak is much better balanced here than in the 2012, which helps convey a more classic style throughout, but it is still quite evident." Robert Parker: "...Looks like there’s completely new packaging for these wines from famous movie producer/director Francis Ford Coppola. They’ve owned Inglenook since 1975, which included the regional estate of 1,600 acres of land with several spectacular vineyards. What they call the “front vineyards” were acquired by Coppola in 1995."

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Rubicon is dark, supple and super-expressive. It shows higher ripeness and a stronger oak imprint than the Cabernet Sauvignon. Even so, it has aged very well. Dark plum, espresso, licorice, sweet spice and a kiss of toasted French oak lend notable complexity throughout. In this tasting, ripeness and new oak feel accented, certainly more so than when this wine was younger. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, May 2024)

Wonderful - smooth. Great finish. Perhaps a bit less complex than I’d preset for soooing on it own. Great with the rib eye steak.

Last year drank a few bottles of 2012, was amazing. Tryout this 2013, needed about 3-5 more years .

Such a classic Rutherford Napa Valley red blend tasting black currant and black berry with savary herbs and oak spice. The tannins are chalky and drying to a very long finish. Superlative!
