Herman Story Nuts & Bolts California Syrah 2014

$46.99

A blockbuster new red from new discovery Herman Story winery - get on the bandwagon now while it's still available. previous vintage 96 Points Robert Parker:  "A wine that stood out in my Paso Robles tasting was the Syrah Nuts and Bolts. Made from 100% Syrah that saw 16 months in 70% new French oak, it's the greatest vintage of this cuvee I've tasted and it offers off the hook notes of creme de cassis, melted licorice, caramelized meats, pepper and crushed flowers. Full-bodied, voluptuous and hedonistic, it's also seamless and balanced, with ultra-fine tannin, no hard edges and blockbuster length. As winemaker Russell From says, "It is a no holds barred expression of Syrah that chases flavor at nearly any cost." Bravo sir. Give this sensational Paso Syrah a year or so in the cellar and enjoy bottles through 2023. ...Pulling from a number of sites spread throughout the Central Coast, Herman Story’s Russell From makes unabashedly Californian wines that make the most of the beautiful fruit that makes California so special. These are not for those craving tiny, mid-weight efforts and they have rocking textures, tons of fruit and most importantly, always remain a joy to drink. These are gorgeous wines." Brix26 Inside Scoop: There are some fantastic small labels coming out of the Paso Robles wine country in California's Central Coast, and Herman Story winery is our latest "crush" (pun intended).  The style of wines are full-throttle, fruit forward bombastic style while keeping things balanced and delicious.  Like going right up to the point of over-the-top and stopping perfectly before it.  The 2014 Nuts & Bolts Syrah is a beautiful example of what small, hands-on winemakers like Herman Story are achieving with the varietal in Paso Robles.

Super dark ruby red. Savory characteristics, especially black pepper with a good amount of black fruits. Very complex and well balanced with savory and fruit notes. Heavy tannins (7/10) and full bodied. Mix of white and black pepper, dark berries, gamey and floral notes. Definitely has tons of potential. Long finish. Made of 100% Syrah and aged for 16 months in 80% new French oak barrels. Drink till 2026.

2014 Vintage. Was a bit funky on opening but opens and lost that funk with air. Massive Syrah fruit and velvet mouthfeel. Great job Russell!

Inky purple dark and thick. This is big from the poor to the swallow. Stone blue fruits jump out with the heavy alcohol. Silky tannins scrape front half of your tongue, opening to currant chocolate leather. Cola back. Would have benefited from a few years in cellar. But certainly delicious now.

Black olive on then nose when opened then softened to blue fruits, black berries, and tobacco. The acidity rounds it out nicely. Drinking well now but will improve over the next year or two.
