Hall Wines Kathryn Hall Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

$159.99

Rare reserve Cabernet from Hall - made in small quantities. HALL “Kathryn Hall” Cabernet Sauvignon showcases the choicest fruit from our finest estate vineyard blocks and extraordinary mountain fruit from our select vineyard partners. Through a mélange of varietals and terroir, this wine has transcended into a symphonic Bordeaux cuvée. Fruit from our renowned Sacrashe vineyard dominates the blend. The captivating voice of the Sacrashe vineyard, with its restrictive volcanic ash soils, high elevation and undulating aspects define the soul of this wine. 98-100 Points Robert Parker:  "The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Kathryn Hall from their Sacrashe Rutherford Vineyard delivers a relatively profound set of aromatics even for a wine that’s only 11 months of age. With almost unreal richness of blue and black fruits, spring flowers, graphite and spice, this is a sensational inky, full-bodied wine that will come close to being a perfect wine when bottled after its full élevage in barrel. Spectacular!... ...Kathryn Hall’s winery is certainly one of the more dramatic as well as up-and-coming superstars of Napa Valley. It seems every effort is made to propel these wines into the very top echelon of quality. There is not a lot to criticize with the multitude of bottlings, all of which offer considerable character and appeal. ."."

Deep purplish ruby red. Rich and intense on the nose with layers of cinnamon, blackberries, nutmeg, cassis, mocha and cocoa. Full bodied and plush with medium plus tannins (7/10) and balanced acidity. Love the palate, big and voluptuous with layers of blackberries, blueberries, black currants, baking spices and a touch of minerality. Long and lingering finish with a little bit of dryness too. Drink till 2045.

Don't get me wrong, this is already phenomenal. Ruby ring and royal purple core. As of this moment, the legs are still falling. Smoked cedar, game meat and currant on the nose. A plush mouthfeel of blackberry pie, aged plum and granite. I don't regret consuming one now, but I need to make sure I have 1 or 2 cellared away. 5-7 years from now, this will be quite different.

This vintage is very jammy. Notes of dark red fruits, well balanced, has lots of hang time in other words full bodied. Grilled a fatty ribeye and complimented the wine.

I thought long and hard about what I wanted to say about this wine. But...here goes. This has to be one of the worst QPR wines I've ever had, but I'm also taking into account how young this wine is. I have to remember that I'm rating the WINE here, but the price tag and hype just can't help but to get in the way. Drank over 6 days. Poured initially from Coravin and let sit for about an hour. I will tell you that I was excited initially, as the nose of this wine overpowered the grass fed beef burgers that were just cooked about 2 feet away from where the wine was being poured. DENSE blackberry and vanilla rolling out of the glass. The entry of this wine is silky, but also has that gritty Napa youthfulness. POWER. Fruit forward monster, ripe blackberry, graphite, mineral and spice rich middle with cherry blossom and finish with a very deep, dark core of blackberry, black pepper spice. The finish is where chocolate covered blackberries and minty notes come out, but the wine was still rather tannic. Developed a bit more after I uncorked it at the end of the week. I blind tasted my wife on this one who guessed that it was a '13 William Harrison cab (vineyard is only 2 miles away as the crow flies, maybe, although Hall's is elevated 750 feet). That cab is $50. This one still has a **LOT** of integrating to do which I am taking into consideration which is why the other bottle is locked up tight, and this one just might not have been on its A-game.
