Hall Wines Kathryn Hall Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

$119

Rare reserve Cabernet from Hall - made in small quantities. HALL “Kathryn Hall” Cabernet Sauvignon showcases the choicest fruit from our _x001F_finest estate vineyard blocks and extraordinary mountain fruit from our select vineyard partners. Through a mélange of varietals and terroir, this wine has transcended into a symphonic Bordeaux cuvée. Fruit from our renowned Sacrashe vineyard dominates the blend. The captivating voice of the Sacrashe vineyard, with its restrictive volcanic ash soils, high elevation and undulating aspects define the soul of this wine. 91 Points Robert Parker:  "The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Kathryn Hall’s deep ruby/purple hue is followed by a wine with clean, pure, black currant fruit, medium body, more concentration than most 2011s, good balance, low acidity and ripe tannin. It should turn out to be very good, possibly outstanding...I tasted eight cuvees of 2010 Cabernet Sauvignons from Hall. I will write abbreviated notes on the eight 2012s I tasted, which is a great vintage in Napa. Based on my experience with the Hall wines, they show better from bottle than from barrel samples, always a sign of a high quality winery. All of these wines possess splendid opaque blue/purple colors. A remarkable thing about all of Hall’s 2012s is that they should be accessible when released given the sweetness of the tannins, yet they should have 20-30-year drinking windows. Congratulations to Kathryn Hall. I have been high on her wines since I first tasted them in the offices of David Ramey. It is rewarding to see that she is realizing the enormous potential that accompanied her debut wines."

I probably sound like a broken record, but here’s another 2011 that shows beautifully. I’ve had quite a few different vintages of this wine and they certainly fall in to the rich, opulent, almost hedonistic type style. While this wine isn’t fully there (which isn’t a bad thing), I also don’t pick up much green/vegetal character to it that some 2011 wines possess. There is a ripeness that cascades all over this wine but it pulls back before going too far. Aromatically, it smells like a baked mixed berry pie, lots of baking spices like nutmeg, licorice, toasted rhubarb fig, tar and sweet pipe tobacco. Nicely integrated on the palate, though the ABV pokes out just a small amount. Waves of flavor on the palate showing red, blue and black fruits alongside graphite, charcoal, dark cocoa and espresso nicely wrapped in a silky and slightly dusty profile. This is likely at peak and will hang here for 2-3yrs before starting its decline. Very nice effort for the vintage.

Powerful, almost ink-like wine. Classic cab, with high alcohol content. Will improve for years, but very enjoyable also now.

100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Very extracted, dark in the glass. Big cocoa on the nose. Dense red fruits pervade on the palate. Nice length on the finish. A nice effort in a challenging vintage.
