Groth Vineyards & Winery Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

$57.99

The Groth 2012 Cabernet hits on all cylinders. Consistently one of the benchmark wines of the Napa Valley.  Another Napa Classic! 95 Points James Suckling:  "This is very classy with mineral, black currant and spice character. Shows chili and Thai basil too. Full body, firm tannins and a bright and persistent finish. Extremely long and elegant. Best ever from here in years?""The 2012 vintage does appear to be a near-perfect vintage", writes James Suckling, "and most producers, even more commercial wineries, made outstanding quality wines....the 2012s tend to show wonderful opulence and purity as well as harmony and balance. Moreover, they are wonderfully attractive to drink young, which is an added value for Napa reds when compared with some other key wine regions in the world."Groth Winery sits on the 121-acre Oakcross Vineyard planted by Justin Meyer and Ray Duncan of Silver Oak in the heart of the Oakville appellation. This prime Cabernet Sauvignon land serves owner Dennis Groth and winemaker Michael Weis well as they fashion some of Napa Valley's best Cabernets.

Beautiful and balanced - aromas of black cherry, mint and caraway seeds, candy and raisins. Medium+ tannins with a still pronounced acidity suggests this could go for a several more years. Enjoyed with a grilled hanger steak.

Very beautifully composed. Last I had it, the wine was open for 8 hours or so before serving. Had it right out of the bottle this time and it was a noticeable richer showing. New oak, vanilla tinged with herbs and mint, tannic backbone. Towards the end of it's short decant it became the wine I remember, with subdued fruit and new oak for a more round, beneath the ground approach.

This performed far beyond my expectation. Cedar and cherry tobacco with silky tannins.

So at first I was like, what is this? It was thin and weird, nothing like Groth. But ya gotta wait! Give this young pup 2-3 hours before you even taste it. The Oakville comes out in force, but it's gotta break free! It's so deep, and so structured, it's amazing.. But it's buried under a mountain of phenols and tannins right now. In fact, save this until 2020. It'll be ahhmazing!

Nice nose. Approachable now but needs some time to open up.

Almost the opposite of bright. Dark, underripe red fruits, dried to minimize juiciness. Violet and floral quality. Some leather. Forest floor and spice. Slightest hint of vanilla deep within the dry chalkiness. Massive tannin. Weighty, chewy, and showing serious grip. Very impressive.
