Freemark Abbey Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

$49.99

93 Points - great buy                     A classic Napa Cabernet from Freemark Abbey. 92+ Points Robert Parker:  "The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon, Freemark Abbey’s generic bottling from Napa, is a brilliant example, and at $50, a heck of a value. A blend of 75.1% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10.9% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec, this wine spent nearly 26 months in oak. Opaque purple in color, it exhibits beautiful blackberry and blackcurrant fruit with hints of white chocolate, allspice and tobacco leaf. It is rich, full-bodied, seriously concentrated, and has 2013's relatively serious structure and tannic clout. Give it 3-4 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 25-30 years... ...Freemark Abbey remains one of the legendary Napa Valley wineries. In spite of what many feared when it was acquired by the Jackson family of Kendall-Jackson, things have only gotten stronger and more consistent under their leadership, with the continuation of chief winemaker Ted Edwards. Since I have been tasting these wines over the last few years, this has been a consistent producer of high quality wines in both red and white. They have added a couple of new cuvées to the portfolio, but are still well-known for their non-malolactic style of Chardonnay."

Massively great standard Napa cab from a massively underrated (in my opinion) winery. There's got to be a good deal of Merlot blended in this as the nose has all the hallmarks of the grape, plus dark chocolate and blue fruit. The palate does get more intense, though it's a softer style of Cabernet that shows off it's complexity without having an overpowering element.

My belated birthday dinner wine; had this with mesquite-grilled hangar steaks with chimichurri. A sentimental favorite winery. The nose has loads of focused cassis, graphite, dry underbrush. Classic. In the mouth, it seems young-ish still: nicely-concentrated, but with still a few elbows from the tannins and the alcohol, which haven’t quite fully integrated. The flavors are clingy, with the cassis and graphite amping up a bit from the nose and lingering. Really nice wine.

This is really lovely. Not trying too hard. Not trying to taste expensive or be a raging bargain. Just nice Napa fruit from a great vintage, made in a classic style. Probably would get lost in a side by side tasting, but one of those wines that just makes a hearty meal better.

Decanted and it opened beautifully, enjoyed with steak. Great depth but fruity and drinkable.
