95 points - limited Up and coming Cult Sonoma Pinot Noir producer Ferren Wines! Limited. previous vintage 95 Points Jeb Dunnuck: "Moving to the reds, the Ferren Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast comes from a mix of the single vineyard releases and spent 18 months in just 20% new French oak. Awesome notes of kirsch, wild strawberries, toasted spice, and flowery incense all emerge from the glass, and this beauty is supple, medium to full-bodied, and seamless on the palate. While it's a big wine, it stays beautifully balanced and elegant." Winemaker Matt Courtney founded Ferren Wines with longtime friend David Wherritt after an eight-year apprenticeship with Helen Turley at Marcassin Vineyard on the Sonoma Coast. The wines are made using traditional Burgundian methods without fining or filtration, and fermentations are carried out exclusively by native flora that arrive on the grapes from the vineyards. The Ferren 2018 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir is one of our favorite small-production Pinots of the vintage.

The 2019 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast) is a heady, effusive wine. Succulent dark cherry, plum, licorice, mocha and a kiss of new French oak lend raciness to this gorgeous, extroverted Pinot Noir from Ferren. Soft and open-knit, with no hard edges, the 2019 is a terrific introduction to Matt Courtney's Ferren wines. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, June 2022)
