Epoch Estate Wines Ingenuity Red Rhone Blend 2013

$69.99

95 points - limited                                      Epoch Winery is a phenomenal new label from Paso Robles.  Justin Smith of SAXUM is the winemaker - not to be missed while still available. 96 Points Robert Parker:  "The GSM blend from the estate is the 2013 Ingenuity Proprietary Red, which in 2013 is 54% Syrah, 21% Mourvedre, 16% Grenache and the balance Petite Sirah. It saw a touch of whole clusters in the fermentation and like the other 2013s here, spent 17 months in roughly 50% new French oak. This downright sexy, full-bodied and sweetly fruited beauty offers tons of black raspberry, plums, incense and peppery aromas and flavors, gorgeous tannin quality and a long, classy finish that keeps you coming back to the glass...Winemaker Jordan Fiorentini is making the most of her new winery on York Mountain, and her 2013s and 2014s are up with the creme de la creme of the vintage. In addition to the new releases, I was also able to do a small retrospective of her Tempranillo." The proprietors of Epoch, the Armstrong family, have overseen the rebirth of a historic vineyard once owned by the philanthropist and musician, Ignacy Jan Paderewski. This site was dedicated to Zinfandel in the early 1900s. Prohibition put an end to that, but that vineyard is now one of three estate vineyards comprising this 95-acre project. One part of Epoch is near Peachy Canyon, a big chunk of it sits next to the Booker Vineyard, and the rest is on York Mountain. The ambition of the Armstrongs is to produce 100% estate wines, and of the 95 acres, 60 are planted with southern Rhone varietals, and the rest with Tempranillo. Saxum’s Justin Smith, who serves as a consultant, told me that he thinks the micro-climate is slightly warmer than his James Berry vineyard. The first releases, which I tasted, are exceptional, so this looks to be a promising new venture.

Deep ruby in color with a short brick rim. Beautiful nose of stewed plums, cherries, raisins, dried figs, black currants, wildflowers, cedar, vanilla, alcohol, licorice, spices, tobacco, light earth, chocolates and dark coffee. Full bodied and bold with medium acidity. Dry and very fruity on the palate with blackberries, cooked plums, sweet cherries, figs, raisins, cedar, licorice, cola, chocolates, vanilla, coffee, tobacco, peppercorn and espresso. Long finish with fine grained tannins and red chili powder. This is a wonderful Syrah blend from Paso Robles. Rich and elegant. This 8 year old is Showing great complexity with a great mouthfeel. Peaking now and will be good in the next couple of years, so drink up if you have any. Good right out of the bottle, and better after 30 minutes of airtime. Drinks like an aged Napa Petite Sirah. Delicious. Robert Parker 96 points. Wine Enthusiasts 94 points. Thank you Scott for sharing this with me. A great wine to have all by itself and talk about. I paired it with a Charcuterie board of meats and cheeses. A blend of 54% Syrah, 21% Mourvèdre, 16% Grenache and 9% Petite Sirah. Aged for 17 months in 49% new French oak barrels. 15.8% alcohol by volume. 94 points. $70 (current vintage).

This stuff was absolutely amazing. Like, a baby SQN, and not near the price. Certified organic, and owned by two Dallas natives! A blend of 2 great vineyards: Paderewksi (which is used in some of the Saxum wines), and Catapult. 54% Syrah, 21% Mourvedre, 16% Grenache, 9% Petit Sirah.

Nose of blackberry, cherry and smoke. Lush taste of roasted meats though maybe this was the ribeye on the grill

Yes yes yes. GSM from Paso. There are things that make you happy, and this is one of them. New world wine at its finest. Not a huge nose, but rich opulent mouthfeel, with coco and expresso and olive tapenade on the pallet mixed with black fruit. 20second finish leaves you wanting more and more.

Epoch Estate Wines previously York Mountain Winery which was founded by my wife’s family. This wine is beautiful. Complex full body. Smoke flavor does not over power the fruit. Nice long finish that sticks with you.
