Emmolo Winery Napa Valley Merlot 2018

$54.99

New! 95 Points                             New Merlot from the folks at Caymus!  Jenny Wagner, daughter of Caymus' Chuck Wagner, has introduced this outstanding Merlot from her new label Emmolo. One of the best Napa Valley Merlots we've discovered this year.  95 Points Brix26:  "This is going to surprise you by being bigger than many Cabs in your cellar. This well-balanced and darkly colored wine evokes the scents of saddle leather, coffee and plum, with traces of smokiness amidst its rich fruit. Smooth with ripe flavors of plums, prunes and cocoa, balanced by acidity and a grippy tannin character. Fantastic.". Jenny Wagner, Winemaker:  "My goal for this wine was to create a well-balanced Merlot with superbly rich fruit, soft tannins and dark color. This first release exhibits aromas of mahogany smoke, leather and brown spice, while earthy flavors intertwine with caramelized plum and smooth tannins reminiscent of ground cocoa."

Deep Ruby with aromas of ripe dark fruits, sweet herb spice and espresso notes. On the palate flavors of blackberry, plum and black cherry with toasty oak, cacao and espresso. Fine soft tannins, long finish ending with fruit, oak and sweet pepper spice. Still has room to age, but nice now!

The wine tonight is the 2018 Emmolo Napa Valley Merlot, Fairfield, CA. On the nose there is black cherry, blackberry, black plum, clove, licorice, cocoa, vanilla, smoke and dark rich earth. On the palate is black cherry, blackberry, all spice, chocolate, black pepper, violets, charred oak, creamy vanilla, graphite and earth. The wine is full bodied, rich velvety almost jammy mouthfeel with medium + acidity and medium smooth fine tannin which moves into a long dark fruit smokey cedar finish. Moving into this weekend ahead please have a great weekend and as always stay safe and healthy. Nostrovia!

So plush, rounded and consistent. Wood treatment presents a lot of vanillin, which relaxes over time. Overall, nicely presented. Will certainly purchase more.

Aged this one for 4 years and it’s paid off. Deep black cherry and an almost mint flavour with tremendous depth. We’re saving some for tomorrow to see how extra air exposure impacts it. Update: The day of air was worthwhile leading to a silkier mouthfeel.

My favorite Merlot. Turned out way better than the roast chicken
