Dunn Vineyards Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

$149.99

98+ Points - limited                         Fantastic new Cabernet releases from Dunn, one of Napa Valley's pioneer wineries. Limited. 97 Points Decanter: "Wiry, opinionated and something of a recluse, Randy Dunn has a reputation for making sleek, powerfully structured, extremely ageworthy mountain cabernet. He is also adamant on the topic of ripeness, vowing in 2007 that he would never make a wine with more than 14% alcohol by volume. The 2016, like most Dunn Cabernets, has not an ounce of body fat. It’s tight, lean, and focused with soaring fine tannin and lots of fantastic savory and spicy flavors from black olives to Chinese 5-spice. The fruit has almost a cool blue character. While I loved drinking this 2016, this wine won’t truly unfurl itself for another several years. Drinking Window 2025 - 2045." 95 Points Antonio Galloni (Vinous): "The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain offers good density, but in more of a medium-bodied style that is quite a bit more approachable than is the norm here. A whole range of inky Howell Mountain fruit, graphite, grilled herb, licorice, spice, chocolate, and lavender nuances open up in a brooding, resonant Cabernet that needs a few years in bottle to start drinking well. There is plenty of the structure readers have come to expect from Dunn, but less youthful austerity, which is not a bad thing at all." 95 Points Wine Spectator: "Sage and bay leaf notes lead the way, followed quickly by black currant and bitter plum paste flavors. The finish is framed by singed cedar and alder details, with a lingering sanguine echo. Needs a little time to soften fully, but everything is in place. Best from 2023 through 2038 ...This iconic winery has some pretty stunning Cabernets for those with patience and cold cellars. Their estate on Howell Mountain now extends to 34 acres of vines. Randy Dunn’s son, Mike, is now running the show and may be picking slightly riper than his dad would have done."

It's time for my #FridayCabernetfix. Here is a delicious Cabernet Sauvignon from Howell Mountain. This is a very tasty Cabernet Sauvignon, although still very young. Medium plus in body with medium acidity. Showing black fruits with cedar, vanilla, leather, spices, earth, tobacco, peppercorn, chocolates, graphite and dark coffee. Dry on the palate with nice complexity. Medium plus on the finish with grippy tannins and tangy cherries. Good right out of the bottle and better after 2 hours of airtime. Not very big, but it's nice to see this moderate alcohol version of a Napa Cabernet. Wine Spectator 95 points. Already drinking beautifully, and will continue to age nicely in the next 10 years. Tasty and spicy. Delicious and engaging. Good by itself or with food. Will pair nicely with BBQ Meats. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes were aged for 32 months in (100% new) French oak barrels. 13.9% alcohol by volume. 92 points. $150.

My first bottle of the ‘16. This is drinking really well right now, and I can’t wait to see it in 10 years. Fruit is ripe, tannins are tight but approachable. Black and red fruit. Acidity still strong but also approachable. Overall well structured and integrated. Just gonna get better with time, but like I said, it can be pnp, but with patience it’ll be fantastic. I agree with WS 95 rating.
