Dominus Estate Napanook Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2013

$69.99

Dominus' second label, the Napanook is a great opportunity to try the Dominus magic at a fraction of the price.  Drink this beauty while the Dominus is aging in the cellar. 93 Points Robert Parker: "There are 2,000 cases of the 2013 Napanook Proprietary Red Wine, a blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc. This wine reflects the much higher quality that’s emerging with the second wine of Dominus, which has really become almost its own entity. Loads of loamy soil notes, grilled herbs, meat, blackcurrants, sweet kirsch and licorice are all present in this medium to full-bodied, lush, sexy wine, even in 2013. It is interesting how much more evolved and forward the 2013 Napanook is compared to the 2013 Dominus. This wine can be drunk over the next 12-15 years. In any event, both merit considerable attention from subscribers.  ...Christian Moueix has probably had his two greatest back-to-back vintages to date with the 2012 and 2013. The 2012s, which are just being released, include the unbelievable Dominus, made of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc and coming in at 14.3% natural alcohol. I said last year that it reminded me somewhat of the 1991 and the 1994, which are both still very strong efforts and, while fully mature, showed no signs of decline if well-stored."

Just as magnificent from bottle as it was in barrel, the 2013 Napanook is dense, powerful and brooding, with searing intensity and extraordinary balance. Lavender, plums, violets, licorice and smoke are some of the signatures, but the 2013 exudes finesse, power and intensity. Bracing and searing, the 2013 is going to require quite a bit of patience. If anything, this is an insane level of quality for the second selection. The 2013 could turn out to be a thirty-year wine. It is every bit that magnificent, especially if given some aeration. Honestly, I was disappointed, perhaps I set my expectations too high. Dark berries, smoky oak - definitely too young!

A blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc. Dark red color with a complex nose of exploding fruit flavors and exotic floral spice. On the palate blackberry and plum flavors with a gentle touch of citrus zest on top of some smoky oak. Still very young and needs time to develop. Waiting in this, one will be rewarded nicely.

We had the 2013 Vintage on 8/13-14/23. A good hybrid of CA and Bordeaux. Black current, black cherry, tobacco, menthol and eucalyptus are all present. Full bodied and well balanced. Well done

After pop-n-pour: not giving much. Clenched, reticent. After two hours this is still tight, but starting to show blackberries, black cherries, smoke, cedar and ink. Approachable, better to wait a few more years and let it turn into something beautiful.
