Cornell Vineyard Sonoma County Estate Grown Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

97 Points - new release                                                        Fantastic new Napa Valley Cabernet from Alpha Omega. 97 Points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is every bit as impressive as it was last year. A wine of soaring aromatic intensity and extraordinary balance, the 2017 captivates all the senses with its exotic beauty. Ripe red cherry fruit, blood orange, spice, rose petal, menthol and licorice build as the wine gains volume and resonance with a bit of air. Quite simply, the 2017 is breathtaking. Don't miss it." Eighteen years ago, on the top of Spring Mountain (just past Pride and Vineyard 7 & 8) Henry and Vanessa Cornell purchased a plot of rugged, land where vines had been tended by early settlers.  With an altitude of 1900 feet, the vineyards of Cornell are amongst the highest in Sonoma County.  Of the two hundred acres, twenty acres are planted to vines and are meticously farmed.  The vines are structured in blocks, each with their own distinctive imprint.   The Cornell’s hired consulting winemaker Francoise Peschon whose winemaking roster includes Araujo, Drinkward Peschon and Vine Hill Ranch (to name a few) and winemaker Graham Wehmeier to transform this rugged land into something special.   Galloni raved about Wehmeier’s talents, saying “ [Wehmeier] will soon to be recognized as one of the most talented and thoughtful winemakers in California.” The 2017 is only the fifth vintage to be released and it is nothing short of stunning. Comprised of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc the blend spends 19 months in 70% new French Oak.   It’s inky, dark color follows through with dark boysenberry fruits, cedar and cocoa.  Tannins and acidity are incredibly integrated leaving a long and lingering finish.   Drink now or (if you can) hold.  642 cases produced.

Plenty of upside, but this needs another 5 or so years in the cellar.
