Continuum Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2014

$224.99

99 Points - limited                                           Continuum is the new tiny production Cabernet from the Mondavi Family. Extremely limited. 99 Points James Suckling:  "The blend of the 2013 Proprietary Red Continuum is 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Cabernet Franc, 9% Petit Verdot and 4% Merlot. This was aged in about 80% new French oak for 20 months prior to bottling. In his technical notes he said that 30% of production was declassified. A flawless, potential masterpiece in the making, the dense ruby/purple color, beautiful notes of blueberry, black cherry, graphite and a touch of earth and background smoke are followed by a full-bodied wine with gorgeous integration of acidity, tannin, wood and alcohol. The tannins are present and substantial, but silky and well-integrated. This is a tour de force from Tim Mondavi and his team – a masterpiece of power and finesse that, although approachable now, should age gracefully for at least another 25-30 years." 96 Points Antonio Galloni (Vinous):  "A raw, intense wine, the 2014 Continuum reveals serious intensity. Next to some of the more recent vintages, the 2014 is a bit more lithe and linear in feel, but like the 2013, it shows darker tonalities of fruit and terrific energy. Mocha, black cherries, graphite and cloves add the final shades of nuance. Although it is early, the 2014 is shaping up very nicely." Brix26 Inside Scoop:  After the sale of the Robert Mondavi winery, winemaker Tim Mondavi chose to focus on one wine and one varietal: Continuum is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.  Sourced from Continuum's Estate vineyard on Napa Valley's Pritchard Hill, one of the priciest Cabernet regions in all of California with neighbors like Colgin, Bryant Family and Chappellet.  It's a beautiful site and judging from the Continuum 2013 Cabernet will be among Napa's most coveted collector wines.

It is time for a delicious Cabernet for my #FridayCabernetfix. Deep inky in color with a short purple rim. Fruity nose of blueberries, black cherries, cedar, vanilla, spices, chocolates, herbs, light eucalyptus, black pepper, herbs and black tea. Full bodied with medium acidity and long legs. Dry on the palate with blackberries, black currants, plums, cooked cherries, figs, cedar, vanilla, licorice, spices, chocolates, tobacco, herbs, earth and peppercorn. Long finish with round tannins and tangy cherries. This 8 year old from the great 2014 vintage, is drinking very nicely now. Fruit forward, rich and extracted. Showing great complexity already, and will continue to age nicely in the next 20 years. This Single Vineyard is opulent and very smooth. Gorgeous with generous fruit. Good right out of the bottle and better after an hour of airtime. Wine Enthusiasts 93 points. Robert Parker 97 points. A great sipping wine to have with friends. Good by itself and will pair nicely with a big piece of steak too. A blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, 15% Petit Verdot and 5% Merlot. 14.8% alcohol by volume. 95 points. $225.

First blind red for my father’s 53rd birthday. We tried four 2014s, two were Cabernet Sauvignons and two were Bordeaux Blends. Deep purplish ruby red. Restrained yet rich nose, dark berries, dark spices and gravel. Heavy tannins (7/10), full bodied and great structure. Rich palate with sweet spices, anise, dark cocoa, black fruits and perfume too. Long and a touch bitter in the finish. Drink till 2037. (95+)

I felt a lot of potential here. Right now it seemed a little coiled. Would love to revisit with some time. Very concentrated and dense yet with energy and minerality throughout. Stuck me as one of the more transparent Pritchard Hill wines I’ve tried. A terroir wine at its core. You can taste the site and it’s only going to get better.

Sometimes you just have to celebrate the moment. I had a Continuum back in its 2nd year of release. And the ‘14 delivered in spades.

One the nose, lean, ripe, ruby, fruits of blackberries, dark cherries, raspberries and plum. Loamy soils, vanilla and fragrant perfumed florals. The body is medium with dry, silty, soft tannins. The fruits are lean & ripe, and creamy; blackberries, dark cherries, raspberries and plums. Dark, dry, loamy soils, dry stems, soft leather, wood shavings, touch of vanilla, raspberry cola, steeped fruit tea, dark chocolate bar, violets, red florals, good acidity and a lean dry finish. It's a decent wine that will improve but I'm not at all seeing the $200 plus a bottle price point. Photo tour of the estate, Continuuim vineyard, tasting room and owner Tim Mondavi and his daughter Carissa.

Layered integration. Accessable early with ageability. Great aromatics showing the vineyard source.
