Colgin Cellars IX Estate Napa Valley Red Blend 2016

100 Points                                                        Limited Colgin red available. Perfect 100 Points. 100 Points Robert Parker: "The 2016 IX Proprietary Red Estate is a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple, it comes strutting out of the glass with flamboyant Black Forest cake, blueberry compote and plum pudding notions plus hints of spice cake, unsmoked cigars, menthol, licorice and dusty soil and accented by wafts of tar and black tea. The palate is full-bodied yet incredibly poised and vibrant with amazing freshness and very fine-grained, very firm tannins. It possesses the most provocative earthy sparks, providing arresting depth to the very long, beautifully perfumed finish. Stunning... ...2016 is like 2013 with more character,” Colgin’s winemaker Allison Tauziet told me. “It offers the harmony of 2013, but it has just a little more to say. In fact, it has some post-drought qualities—creating more flavor, more color and more stuffing. And it seems to have the texture of a riper vintage. I love the aromatics of a cooler season like this. It was the weather at the end of the season that drove everything home. The harvest was well-paced, although the flavors peaked simultaneously, so you couldn’t take it for granted.” Tauziet and the team at Colgin were 100% on their game in 2016, as were the “grand cru” vineyard sites they bottle: Tychson Hill (in St. Helena), Cariad (a blend of David Abreu vineyards) and IX Estate (on Pritchard Hill). When the planets align so perfectly for the Cabernets in a vintage and the wines are this jaw-dropping, how else can you rate the results?"

Deep purple, this is huge on the nose. Violet extract, licorice whip, sage, BBQ meat, candied bacon, jerky, mocha, all lined next to roasted black berry and blueberry, even allow for liquor. Intense palate, penetrating density and incredibly long. Palate is all purple and distilled fruit, sage, chaparral, candied olive, sweet tobacco, spicecake, wraps up with talcum and eucalyptus. Notes from 9.7.18

Mixed ripe black cherry and currant with some edges of purple fruit, quite rich and coating. Backed by very mineral notes of iron, chaparral, bay, leather and savory meat. The palate has considerable flesh to it, muscular with some roundness in shape to finesse it out. Somewhere between Tychson and Cariad in concentration. Again lovey terroir notes of chaparral/manzanita, bay, hung beef, leather, cigar box and espresso. The alcohol is present here, on the finish. Notes from 9.7.18

Very bold, oaky finish. Sugary, but nothing over the top.

What a gift to be able to do a wine comparison. This Colgin is a bright dark ruby garnet color and a big nose filled with cherry-raspberry fruit musky scents of sandalwood, cedar, leather spice, stewed meat, eucalyptus and vanilla. A rich soft taste and full body flavors. Plum and dark berries hit the palate with pepper spices, mocha vanilla and a glycerine burn. Long finish of espresso chocolate, meats and tobacco giving an elegant feel and sophistication. Excited to see how it changes throughout the evening. A fav for sure!
