Bright, powerful and pulsing with energy, the 2016 possesses stunning textural depth allied to a real sense of drive. Black cherry, tobacco, menthol, sage and licorice give this Cabernet from southern Oakville much of its distinctive personality. In this tasting, the 2016 Ulysses simply towers with pedigree and character. I loved it. Although the track record is short, the 2016 is the finest wine Christian Moueix and Tod Mostero have made at Ulysses." Dominus owner Christian Moueix had always been intrigued by the potential of southern Oakville’s terroirs, so when the Schmidt Ranch came onto the market in 2008, he jumped at the chance to acquire it.The property, renamed Ulysses, sits on an alluvial fan, revealing similar soils to the better-drained western part of Dominus’ Napanook vineyard. But climactically the site is very different. Here, the cooling influence of the San Pablo Bay is mitigated by the Yountville hills, so summer temperatures at Ulysses can be as much as four degrees Fahrenheit warmer. Upon acquiring the property, an extensive programme of replanting began, informed by over 30 years’ experience at Dominus.

It’s been a long week… this needs a decant - which I’m not going to do. A touch gnarly and brambly.. cinnamon, all spice and blueberry jam on the mid palate. This came across as disjointed. Good, but not tickling my fancy. Day 2 - no change.

Much improved from my recollection of the 14 vintage. Presents blueberries and coffee notes on the nose. Palate is brimming with texture. Tannins are bold, but in check. Beautiful presentation with jet black fruit leads me to think that this has 20 years + ahead of it. Big-time hold at this point. Thank you @Rick K for opening your cellar!

Third bottle, last one was in August 21. Blue and black fruit forward. Floral in the nose. Thick mouthfeel. Still requires a decant. Tannins well integrated. Nice finish. Great wine that can go many more years. Too bad this was my last bottle.

Blueberry, floral on the nose. Dense, big blue and black fruit up front. Thick tannins but very well integrated. Medium finish. Less green pepper than last time about a year ago. Definitely evolving and I wouldn’t open another ‘16 for at least 2-3 more years. This wine could age another 15+.
