New release New release from Caymus! Limited. Chuck Wagner and his winemakers promised themselves "a new wine bearing the Caymus name would have to be great - or, it would not be bottled". previous vintage 93 Points Wine Spectator: "Dark and plush, this combines structure with polish, offering notes of ripe blackberry, dark chocolate, grilled herb and toasty spice that linger toward refined tannins. Drink now through 2025." Winemaker Chuck Wager: "A velvety purple with ruby-red highlights, the 2017 vintage of Grand Durif features an abundant one of dark plums and baked blueberries, woven with scents of lavender, white rose petals, sweet smoke and brown spice. Entry on the palate is smooth, yielding to a pop of high, luxurious tannins that then sneak back, revealing lush fruit flavors of dark berry cobbler. What gives this wine its singular character are the tannins - strong yet supple, pronounced while being strikingly soft. The finish is long, with warm, evocative notes of unsweetened cocoa. Still quite young, this vintage can be enjoyed now and also has tremendous aging potential." ~ Chuck Wagner

Wonderful Petite Syrah based wine. BIG and powerful but elegant at the same time! Ripe blue/black fruit aromas and flavors. Nose has touches of lilac and chocolate. Hints of vanilla, milk chocolate and toasty oak come through on the long finish. Deep Maroon/Purple color. Underrated varietal and love the fact that the Caymus Team refers to the grape this wine was made from under its traditional name of Duriff.

First reaction is modest nose and too much alcohol which was confirmed with a harshness on tasting. Sign Ivan the tannins hiding rip plum and cherry. Probably should have waited 3-5 years. An 8.3 at this stage so over priced.

Drinking this was like getting smacked in mouth with an oak 2×4 slathered in blackberries that had been soaking in alcohol. No subtlety or finesse; not that one could expect this from petite sirah, but I still feel that this was not a typical expression of this grape. Loads of black fruit, spice, and then some hints of tobacco and cacao. I will say, though, that this wine was rather smooth with no harshness. Not my jam, though. 100% Petite Sirah (Durif). 12/25/22.
