Caymus Vineyards Special Selection Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

$159.99

New 2013 vintage now available!  One of Napa Valley's Classic Cabernets. Caymus Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon is the only wine in the world twice honored as "Wine of the Year" by Wine Spectator Magazine (amongst approximately 10,000 wines). Extremely limited. previous vintage 95 Points Robert Parker:  "A brilliant wine, and one of the stars of the vintage, the Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection boasts aromas of blueberry pie, blackberries, cassis and white flowers. This full-bodied, velvety textured, delicious 2011 is already drinking well, and should continue to do so for 10-12 years. It is a terrific success for the vintage...Though the Wagner family is not quite the pioneer that Louis Martini, Charles Krug, Beaulieu Private Reserve, Ridge Vineyards and a few others are, they have long farmed and made the wines at Caymus Vineyards." 97 Points Wine Enthusiast:  "So delicious now, you can hardly keep your hands off it.  Blackberry tart, ripe blueberry, cassis, milk chocolate, licorice and sweet, smoky cedar flavors flood the mouth, dramaticaly huge and memorable, and lasting long into the finish.  The tannins are obvious, but sweetly ripe and soft.  A brilliant evocation of Napa Cabernet, shows the class and potency this bottling has exhibited for many years, and bleieve it or not, the price is a relative bargain these days.  Drink now through 2020."

Night nine on the cruise and back to Chops Grille tonight. Asked for the Special Selection and was surprised to see it was a 2013 and not a 2014 like last night, always happy to try new vintages! Dark purplish ruby red. Dark and thick nose with notes of dark cocoa, spices and cassis. Heavy tannins (7.5/10) and fuller bodied than the 2014. Not as big of a 'fruit bomb' or as blue as the 2014 but more complex with layers of dark berries, black cherries, spices, oak and sweet spices. Needs a bit more time to reach its full potential. Long finish too. Drink till 2030.

Oh yes! The big boy from Caymus! While I have mixed feelings on the Special Select blends since 2010, this one is going to be great! While 2012 was the best regular Caymus ever, the Special Select was not so much so. This 2013 makes up for that. The quintessential Caymus color, velvet across the tongue, and the Rutherford dust tanin and finish.

While it is a great bottle of wine, the 2013 does not compare to the 2012. Bold fruit, tampered down by some proper tannins. And then there is that wonderful velvety Rutherford dust on the long finish.

Blackberry, licorice with a hint of tobacco leaf - awesome with grilled lamb.
