Caterwaul Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

$124.99

96 points                                      Caterwaul is a new small-production label from superstar winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown and Matt Hardin. A fantastic boutique Napa Cabernet. 96 Points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Cemetery from St. Helena is in the same ballpark yet offers a touch more up-front generosity. Gorgeous black cherry, cassis, flowery incense, Asian spices, tobacco, and candied orange zest give way to a full-bodied Cabernet with wonderful purity of fruit, moderate tannins, terrific balance, and a great finish. Both of these 2018s shows the more open, slightly less concentrated style that can be common from the higher yields and are already a joy to drink, yet they're going to evolve gracefully for a solid 20 years on their impeccable balance and purity. ...Caterwaul is a new collaboration between superstar winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown and Matt Hardin from Barbour Vineyard Management. Started in 2014, they produce a Napa Valley Cabernet from Matt’s estate vineyard in Pope Valley and a Regusci Vineyard release from Stags Leap. As Cabernet goes from Napa Valley, these are incredible values that should be snatched up by readers."

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is not just gorgeous, it is also one of the best values readers will come across. Ripe, juicy and expressive, the 2018 once again hits all the right notes. Inky dark fruit, smoke, licorice, spice and sweet floral accents all race out of the glass. Readers will have a very hard time finding a better wine for the money. The balance of various appellations works so well here. The Caterwaul Napa Valley bottling might just be the finest wine in the market in its price range. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, January 2021)

For a $50 Napa Cabernet with free shipping, this is a slam dunk. Delicious already, but should be even better down the road.

I was very excited to try this and even used @Paul T- Huntington Beach to justify not letting it rest after shipping. I think this is going to be really good. It needs a bit of time. For TRB Cabernet, this is a steal!
