Casanova di Neri Tenuta Nuova Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2013

$89.99

One of the top-scoring Brunellos from the great 2013 vintage. Limited. 98 Points James Suckling: "A vivid and bright red with intense blueberries and raspberries. Floral undertones and tons of citrus, too! Full-bodied, dense and layered. Polished tannins and fantastic fruit. The muscularity of the structure is what gives this wine focus and intensity. So serious for the vintage. Give it time to show its greatness. Drink in 2022." 97 Points Robert Parker: "Casanova di Neri's 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova is celebrating its 20th anniversary (1993-2013), and a special gold-label edition of the wine was made to commemorate this important milestone. This is a bold and expressive Brunello that displays tightly knit aromas of Morello cherry, spice, leather and balsam herb that are the building blocks of the most beautiful Brunellos that come to mind. The Casanova di Neri house style implies a modern and sophisticated approach for sure. But the inner spirit and texture of Sangiovese is so fine and polished in its natural state that it hardly matters. The personality of the grape shines through with a loud and confident voice." 95 Points Antonio Galloni (Vinous): "Bright deep red. The youthfully reticent nose hints at flinty red cherry, blueberry, graphite, cedar and pepper. Then flavors similar to the aromas, and a tight acid spine and serious but polished tannins nicely extending and framing the brooding fruit notes and peppery flintiness on the long, deep, complex finish. A truly outstanding Tenuta Nuova Brunello that seems less fruit-forward and more shut down than usual but holds exciting promise. Interestingly, some of this wine’s elements, such as its flinty nuances, reminded me of Casanova di Neri’s Cerretalto Brunello (made with grapes grown at the opposite end of the Montalcino territory). I guess my palate needs to take a vacation. This knockout wine will age splendidly and will likely merit an even higher score in eight to ten years’ time."

Not particularly impressive in the blind - blocky, lacking elegance, and clearly Italian. Had an inkling it was a Brunello given the group I was with. It did eventually reveal some delectable elements by the end of the night. Red-fruited and saline with some oaky spice, yet I felt its energy was drained by too much dry tannins, plum-ish and earthy characters. One to revisit, though my limited experience with this producer so far has been rather lacklustre.

This will be a great wine - steeped in sweet cocoa-laced sour cherry, balsamic - but please sock this away for 5 years, likely 95+

Always a favorite. Mid-full body, round, dry, craving some aged cheese.

Casanova di Neri was established in 1971 when Giovanni Neri acquired a large estate within Montalcino, and celebrating its 20th anniversary with the ‘13 vintage, with a special gold-label edition. A big wine, decant if you can’t cellar for a few years. Ruby with complex fruit, floral and citrus spice. On the palate cherry and raspberry flavors with spice, cacao and leather notes. Full-bodied, graceful tannins, lingering, well balance ending with elegance and a great mouthfeel.

Vinfanticide to be sure but fun to take a peek at what will be an epic wine. All the pieces there - sweet oak, sour cherry, saddle leather - but years from coming together.

Just the start of its drinking window. Wait at least another year if you have some. Well balanced and cherries galore.

This was super elegant. While time will be it’s friend, it was drinking incredibly well right now. mature nose and a palate driven by sun roasted raspberry. White pepper adds depth. Medium plus acidity, and longer finish. Sooo good
