Carlisle Winery & Vineyards The Integral Sonoma County Red Blend 2016

$47

Fantastic new Red from Carlisle, one of our favorite small producers!  Very limited - only 300 cases produced. 94 Points Antonio Galloni (Vinous): "The 2016 Integral is 55% Syrah and 45% Mourvèdre. Vinification with 100% whole clusters of the Mourvèdre adds striking aromatic top notes. Rose petal, sage, mint and raspberry notes show terrific raciness in this flavorful, mid-weight red. The Integral is another arresting wine from Mike Officer." 93 Points Robert Parker: "Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 The Integral, a blend of 55% Syrah and 45% Mourvèdre, opens with a stunning perfume of violets and roses over a core of crushed black plums and black cherries with a waft of black pepper. The palate is very big, concentrated and full-bodied with firm, rounded tannins and a refreshing lift, finishing very long and very perfumed. 519 cases produced... ...From humble beginnings in 1998, Carlisle continues to go from strength to strength, growing from a solid philosophy of sourcing mainly Zinfandel and Rhône varieties from ancient vineyards in Sonoma and further afield. So, most of the vines used by Mike and Kendall Officer were planted from 1888 to 1934. From 2013, they have their own winery in which to create their magic—the old Robert Mueller winery in Russian River Valley."

This year it’s a coferment of 52% syrah/48% grenache. It’s extremely young and primary at this stage, bold acidity and slight tannic presence. The brightness of the grenache dominates the profile, but there are some smokey undertones from the syrah. This should develop into something fantastic, it just needs time. Will wait 5 years before the next one.
