Carlisle Winery & Vineyards Steiner Vineyard Grüner Veltliner 2014

$28

A rare white release from Carlisle. Limited. 89 Points Robert Parker:  "I’ll just briefly summarize the 2014s. It was the earliest vintage ever for Mike Officer and probably he’ll beat that early harvest record in 2015. In this case, he was finished by October 6, which was a first, and it will be interesting to see if he eclipses that in 2015, which was looking even earlier. The production levels were relatively abundant for Mike Officer and the wines fruit-forward, although softer and less reserved than some of the 2013s. While not quite as opaque in color, they are loaded with fruit, supple and luscious. The only white wine, the Grüner Veltliner Steiner Vineyard, makes an appearance in 2014, and it’s another beauty – it’s crisp and the only wine in bottle. The other wines all stood out and will, no doubt, merit outstanding ratings across the board for their intensity, richness, and full-bodied power. If you already know what Mike Officer does, and the style of his wines, you won’t be disappointed in his 2014s. You may even like them as much as any vintage, given the fact that this year shows a lot of up-front fruit and charm..." Winery Tasting Notes:  Medium-light yellow-gold. Absolutely stunning aromas of white grapefruit, pepper, mango, snap pea, and gardenia. Great stuff! In the mouth, medium-full bodied with flavors of nectarine, apricot, grapefruit, and pineapple. Despite the fireworks on the palate, quite aristocratic and fine-boned thanks to perfectly balanced acidity. As someone who enjoys a lot of the top Grüners of Austria, I find this to be comparable. Drink this very special wine from release through 2015.

This is a first for me. Here I found a mix of herbs and earth up front, which settled into young peach, minerals and hints of brown spice. It was unbelievably silky on the palate from start to finish with soothing peach, apple tones, and a zing of zesty acidity. The finish was clean with a mouthwatering bump of acidity and caking minerality.

Wow. Who knew you can make such a good Gruner in Sonoma. Less acidic and tart than an an Austrian Gruner but has an amazing balance of glycerin with a biting acidic grip. I wish I had bought more of this

Not your typical GV. Expressive nose that backed it up with powerful apples, honey and white flowers. Mineral notes thru/o and finishes with pleasant acidity

The nose brings apple juice with a scent or cider with a deeper breath, pineapples and melon too. Palette is rich and unctuous in a good way. Finish is long and lingering and gives a lemony zing at the end.
