Carlisle Winery & Vineyards Bennett Valley Syrah 2010

$35

Fantastic new Syrah release from Carlisle, one of our favorite small producers!  Very limited - only 483 cases produced. previous vintage 93 Points Robert Parker:  "The 2009 Syrah Cardiac Hill is a gorgeous, thrilling wine laced with bacon fat, tapenade, savory herbs and plums. It possesses gorgeous aromatic delineation and fabulous length. The intense, mineral-drenched finish argues for cellaring the wine for at least another 2-3 years, but readers are going to have a very hard time keeping their hands off this gem. Cardiac Hill is a very cold site. The wine (100% Syrah) was vinified with 40% whole cluster and aged in French oak barrels, 27% new. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029."

@Delectable Wine Syrah, Bennett Valley. A nice enjoyable, bargain-priced, "middle-of-the-road" Syrah that leaves me wanting more. More of everything.

Make my funk the "C" funk! That's the first thought that came into my mind when I opened this outstanding cool-climate Syrah. It's nearly opaque purple color. With some air that "funk (which I personally dig) is replaced with black fruits, violets, and graphite aromas that leap from the glass. On the palate it's lighter-bodied, and polished with a harmonious character that shows blackberry, black raspberry, a bit of boysenberry flavors and an appealing minerality. #keepsyrahweird

13.8% alc. I can only imagine how confusing it must be (if anybody is actually paying attention to my scribblings on this app) to "read" my palate. Often wines to me are either too big/bold and other times too lean or lacking identity. This specific wine found me wishing for more stuffing and "flabbiness" (from riper fruit) as I think Syrah is a varietal that lends itself to a style with some funk, slight RS, higher alc. and some "wild" aromas. This wine is like that straight-A's student in your class that didn't stay for beers/cigarettes in the gym locker after PE. (he was) correct but also a bit predictive, boring and missed out on a lot of fun!

13.8% alc. Took about 60min. to open up but still just a little more light-handed take on Syrah than I'm used to from Carlisle. Good not great but as anything from here always a solid QPR.

Very nice wine, great flavor and balance but unfortunate doesn't have any Syrah characteristics in it. More like a petite Syrah.

Dark burgundy in color, smell of raisin, fig, and current, soft tannin with a balanced medium finish.

This was unreal back in December and now a shell of itself... Where's the aromatics of meat and spice and dark fruit.? Where's the velvet texture?
