Cakebread Cellars Dancing Bear Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2014

$149.99

Rare Reserve Cabernet from Cakebread's Howell Mountain vineyard! 97 Points Robert Parker:  "The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Dancing Bear Ranch, from Howell Mountain, is 98% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc. This is stunning Cabernet Sauvignon with floral notes intermixed with graphite, crème de cassis, blackberry, mulberry and a hint of chocolate. The wine is large-scaled, but elegant, full-bodied, rich and exceptionally well-balanced with impeccable purity and length. This is a beauty of craftsmanship and great terroir to drink it over the next 20 years." The Cakebread Dancing Bear Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is true to its mountain provenance boasting intense, complex, high-toned aromas of Bing cherry, brambleberry and spicy dark plum fruit mingled with enticing floral, sage, tobacco, chocolate, earth and mineral scents. Incredibly pure and focused on the palate, its beautifully structured wild cherry, ripe fig, spicy black fruit and dark chocolate flavors reveal a pronounced minerality in the wine’s long, persistent finish. Delicious now with grilled steaks, venison, and hearty stews, this wonderfully rich, complex, chiseled mountain Cabernet Sauvignon will handsomely repay long-term cellaring. 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc."

Dancing with bears tonight. It took me more than an hour to teach this bear the Texas Two Step, but after that we were cutting a rug. The initial bright red fruit notes eventually slide into a darker, richer profile of blackberry, charcoal, currant, cassis, and a mix of dark and milk chocolate. What really takes this from good to great is the constant background of baking bread infused with rosemary. For the hedonist, this is a pure pleasurefest, with more than enough complexity and nuance to satisfy the intellectual, but like a soaring ballad, the real appeal here is to the romantic.

Great wine. It does open with more big red fruit, then let it open and it goes black. Great fruit, chocolate, nice finish.

By far Cakebread’s best wine but needs more time for tannins to calm.
