Booker Vineyard Ripper Paso Robles Grenache 2014

$119.99

98 pts - rare                                  New release from Paso cult producer Booker Vineyards. As always, limited. 98 Points Robert Parker:  "A true gem in the vintage, the 2014 The Ripper (Grenache) is reminiscent of a top vintage of Domaine de Marcoux's Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes with its gorgeously pure bouquet of framboise, kirsch, spice box, licorice and dried flowers. Medium ruby colored and semi-opaque, this full-bodied Grenache has no hard edges, a full, layered texture and building, ripe, sweet tannin that really stretches out the finish. This is a fabulous, tour de force effort that I wish every reader could taste. It's sensational today, but should continue to shine for upwards of a decade... ...As I've commented in the past, the wines from Eric Jensen at Booker are some of the most impressive releases coming out of California. While in the past, they relied on pure fruit and texture to impress, today they possess layered, elegant and complex characters paired with serious depth, richness and structure. While 2013 -2015 are all great vintages at this estate, the 2014s have more noticeable tannic grip and really deserve 2-3 years or more of cellaring."

Black cherry and spice nose. Cherry pie with a hint of leather. Firm tannins but not dry. Still needs time

2014 was a monster decanted and by end of evening the sluttiness had faded and the cranberry raspberry fruits came alive to show so nice acidity buried in the there.

Fruit and herbs on the nose. Fun to drink this Paso wine alongside Spanish Garnacha for comparison. Fruit forward. Benefits from decanting.

Somewhat unimpressive at this moment ... alcohol bitterness playing heavy hand. Almost a bit over extracted/over ripe fruit profile. Should have consumed earlier when pretty primary notes were pronounced
