Bedrock Wine Co. Evangelho Vineyard Heritage Zinfandel Blend 2015

$35

Hot new boutique producer from Sonoma label. A rising start to watch! 94 Points Antonio Galloni (Vinous):  "The 2015 Evangelho Heritage Wine is another highlight in this lineup. Sublime aromatics, red stone fruit and finessed tannins elevate the Evangelho. Nuanced to the core, the 2015 exudes class and pedigree. The Evangelho is not as obvious as some of the other wines in the range, but it is among the most beautiful." 93 Points Robert Parker: "From Contra Costa County, the 2015 Proprietary Red Evangelho Heritage comes from directly rooted Zinfandel, Mourvèdre, Carignan, Palomino, Alicante and Mission all planted in the 1890s on what is basically a sandy bench. The briary intensity of the Zinfandel is well-displayed, but then the blue and black fruits seem to jump out as do some dusty/loamy soil notes, forest floor, underbrush, pepper and background smoky notes. This is rich, floral, heady, intriguing and provocative. Drink it over the next 5-7 years... Everybody should recognize the incredible speed at which Morgan Twain-Peterson has built his Bedrock Wine Co. into a world-class performer. Moreover, few people have done more to preserve and save heritage/ancient-vine vineyards than Peterson. Here is his new lineup of wines that shows his creative Midas touch for coaxing full character out of his diverse terroirs and blends. His commitment to excellence is something to admire." The Bedrock 2015 Heritage Red from the Evanghelho Vineyard in Contra Costa County truly embodies Bedrock is all about. This wine is a "field blend" made from 22 different varietals from vines that were planted 123 years ago. Winemaker Morgan Peterson has gone through and identified every vine on the property by hand. The main component is Zinfandel, with the remaining 40% of the wine a blend of what has been planted in the vineyard for the past century. Peppery fruit is in the lead with this wine, followed by plums and cloves. It is a very dark and textured wine, chewy and dense. This wine has so much history in each glass. If you are a fan of the tradition and history of wine, this is something to be tried and shared with friends.

Loads of bramble red fruit, sweet spice, cocoa, and sandalwood aromas. Silky mouthfeel with gentle tannins and medium acidity.

Medium ruby red with garnet edges. Layered nose with notes of smoke, very dark, touch of cocoa, baking spices and some tight dark berries. Moderate tannins (6.5/10) and medium plus bodied. Well rounded even at a young age. Notes of bark, dark berries, broken twigs, a touch savory with medium plus acidity. Dry and long finish. Drink from 2018 till 2026. (91+)

Way young for this, but that doesn't make it less enjoyable, just less fully developed and complex as it will be down the road. Density and concentration without super maturity and jamminess.

Evangelho '15 Shootout #2 The carignan in this field blend brings an unexpected silkiness. More restrained than a lot of recent Bedrocks. Drinks well now, but I'm saving my other bottle for a couple of years.

Dry farmed, own roots, planted in the 1890s. Old California meets the modern age. Field blend and I don't care what the grapes are. Pretty on the nose, even better in the mouth. But so young. Glad I have more. Such a delightful wine. Went great with tonight's spicy tri-tip. Thanks, Morgan!

With a long decant, this was pretty accessible. Juicy with a mix of red fruit and some earthiness. Tannins catch up at the end. The mataro plays a definite role in the flavor profile. Quite good.

Previous vintages are much better. This is much riper. It’s hot. Big downtick.

I recently read about Bedrock's purchase of the Evangelho Vineyard, and was relieved to know that these old, own-rooted vines in sandy soil will be preserved. As for the wine, it is wonderful, with raspberry/boysenberry aromas and flavors, with notes of beeswax, earth, spice, and violets. Rich and velvety, but bright in its great balance of acid, tannin, and fruit. Excellent length, and just 14.1% abv. My new favorite Zinfandel-based red blend!
