Aubert UV-SL Vineyard Chardonnay 2018

$199.99

Limited new release from cult Chardonnay producer Mark Aubert. 98 Points Robert Parker:  "The 2018 Chardonnay UV-SL comes across as a little shy compared to the Napa Chardonnays, slowly unfurling to reveal oyster shells, peach blossoms, honeysuckle and brine notes over a core of lemon marmalade, crème brûlée and pink grapefruit plus a touch of key lime pie. Full-bodied, the palate is like a tightly coiled spring with loads of tension between the racy acid and all the taut fruit, finishing very long and very minerally. This should be very long-lived!"... ...Mark Aubert is one of the contenders for California’s finest practitioner of Burgundian-styled, yet classic, California Chardonnays. His offerings are all made like grand cru Burgundies with full malolactic, the use of French oak and lees stirring, but the purity of fruit, the textural dimensions, and the stunning singularity of these Chardonnays can only be matched by a handful of other Chardonnay producers in the world. He’s that good. Aubert’s 2012s, which I have enjoyed multiple times out of bottle since I purchased most of them, merit the scores I gave them last year."

So exotic and refined. Such an outstanding example of Sonoma chard. One of the few wineries where I’m on the list and happily purchase. See prior notes for additional details.

Aubert can do no wrong in our minds. Nor can my wife when it comes to my fave fruit cobbler... Nose displays almonds and white flowers. The palate is so balanced, nuanced, elegant and precise. A perfect structure which segues into some sexy chalky minerality. Moderate sweetness and relaxed acidity define the individual identity of this chard.

Wifey and I concur with the score. May have approached this too early. Lacks the depth and complexity we have come to expect from this vineyard. Still very good. Hoping that bottle age brings a little more intensity, although it may just bring age. Day 2 and this wine has has switched gears and developed more urgency. Much improved, so I’ll take the score up 2 pts. This reminds me of a quote “Instant gratification takes too long” - Carrie Fisher

Zippy fruity balanced Chard. No crazy oaky overtones. Just rounded grape with a lingering loveliness.

This bottle was sub-peak but it still resonated. A bit more smoky and mineral driven than normal and the fruit was a bit more reserved than last few. All in all - still a solid fun wine that paired well with local broiled catch of the day on a summer eve.

Holy underwear!! This. Wine. Rocks. So good on so many levels....Bright and powerful. Yolky but with a swirling whirlwind middle and finish. Vibrant but quite smooth. It has a complexity with a number of flavors - sweet fruit, stony minerals and great grip. Had this with some baked halibut steaks and it was a beautiful experience.

Not that I’m ever surprised by an awesome chardonnay from Mark Aubert, but the 2018 UV-SL is the closest thing I’ve had to my favorite of his chards, the Lauren Vineyard wines. This is just spectacular.
