Aubert Russian River Valley Chardonnay 2018

$109

99 points - limited                    Limited new release from cult Chardonnay producer Mark Aubert. Robert Parker: "...Mark Aubert continues to set the bar incredibly high for the world-class quality of his Burgundian-styled, remarkable Chardonnays, which come from relatively cool sites spread from Rutherford in Napa Valley to the far reaches of the Sonoma Coast. As I indicated last year, Aubert is at the top of his game, and it is hard to believe any Chardonnay winemaker in the world is turning out a half-dozen Chardonnays at this qualitative level year in and year out. He has had an incredible run of great success, after being mentored by none other than the reclusive and supremely talented Helen Turley when he took over the winemaking job at Peter Michael, then proceeded on to impressive sojourns at Colgin Estate as well as Tom Futo’s winery in Oakville."

Take back everything I said about Mark’s Russian River Wines. This one is something I would buy a case or two of. Just sensational effort by Mark!

So consistent. We are happy we are on the allocation. Honeysuckle and butterscotch play out on the nose. Beautiful display on the palate. Starts with a burst of energy, which effortlessly glides onto bright citrus notes, with sherbet. So clean and refreshing, we could drink this like water!

Nose displays butterscotch and blood orange. Palate presents caramel, baked bread and a hint of green capsicum. Finishes with good weight, round acidity, and moderate sweetness. These appellation bottlings from Aubert are understated, and wonderful as a result. Renovation update - first phase of stairs are finally in, after I (general contractor) screwed up my angles. Monday/Tuesday will be big...

The sheer beauty of these Aubert wines is that I’m never prepared for what to expect... @David L introduced wifey and I to this brilliant chard. It glides effortlessly across the nose and palate. For an appellation bottling, this is a reference-point from which to compare the best chards. Homied nose, complimented with lemon oil and barrel toast. Palate presents butterscotch, coconut, and a hint of apricot. Flamboyant for its sheer complexity. Fleshy, yet so refined. Acidity is present, and is tucked in. Please madam, may I have some more???

My first appellation Aubert chard and I’m hooked. Lacks the expected definition of a specific vineyard site but brings out everything RRV fruit can offer.

Acidic and pear on the palate. Very crisp and light. I would buy this again.

Wanted to try this in advance of this week’s release. Lemon curd and wet stone. Much fuller bodied than most chards, but just my speed. Really nice now, but could see this hitting its stride in 3-4 years.

Exceptional for an AVA level blend. Stone fruits supported by a balanced structure and excellent finish. Tasty, and drinking well now.
