Anthill Farms Campbell Ranch Vineyard Syrah 2018

$38

One of the best new producers in California!  The partners, who all previously worked at Williams Selyem, are deeply committed to crafting high quality, cool climate single vineyard Pinot Nor, Syrah and Chardonnay sourced from vineyards in Northern California. Limited. 97 Points Antonio Galloni (Vinous):  "One of the stars in this range, the 2018 Syrah Campbell Ranch is exceptionally beautiful. Inky, unctuous, spice, lavender and menthol infuse the 2018 with tons of flavor complexity, but it is the wine's textural richness that stands out most. The 2018 is simply dazzling. That's all there is to it." Located a few miles from the Pacific Ocean, this vineyard sits near the tiny town of Annapolis, and is farmed by Steve Campbell. At approximately 750 feet above sea level, it sits right at the boundary of the marine layer, ensuring that the cool, coastal climate delays ripening well beyond the warmer vineyards to the east. The two-decade-old vines grow on sandy, low-vigor Goldridge soil, which helps reduce yields to near two tons per acre.

Tannins, acid, and fruit never came together in a dance... felt rigid. Had this alongside Melville and Holus Bolus, which were more enjoyable now. Am I missing something with the v97 rating??!?

Nice quality/price ratio. Dark squid-ink purple. 13.1 ABV... not a hint of jammy, sweet, over-the-top-richness. Pleasant mid-weight dinner companion. Good not great. Nice acid/fruit balance...lots of blackberry/blueberry/cherry hints.

True cool site Sonoma coast Syrah in the hands of talented winemakers is criminally underrated. Delicious first night, falls apart overnight in the fridge. Beware.

13.1% high acid red and blue-fruited cool climate California syrah. Needs one more year in the cellar.

Beautiful new world Syrah…13.1 ABV…med-weight glory. Smooth, silky , balanced with a stellar finish. Dark, rich purple with a touch of dirt to play off the dark berry notes. These guys make great Pinot Noir… but at around $30 this is a brilliant bargain!

More of a tannic backbone than the Peter’s Vineyard from this same vintage. Red fruited with a touch of graphite. To me, it definitely has new world fruit, but it’s not overdone by any means.
