Alban Vineyards Alban Estate Vineyard Viognier 2014

$49.99

One of California's finest Viogniers from the Master John Alban.  Very limited.previous vintage 94 points Robert Parker: "The Viognier Estate is about as hedonistic as this variety gets, yet always stays in check and is a joy to drink. Unfortunately, there are only 250 cases to go around. Ripe, full-bodied, voluptuous and decadent, with textbook apricot, flowers, brioche and orange blossom aromas and flavors, it will easily stand beside a great Condrieu. Like with the Central Coast release, it will drink nicely for several years...I had a great visit with John Alban, whose estate is located at the southern end of the Edna Valley and in one of the coolest AVAs in California. Despite this, he makes some of the most concentrated, rich and age-worthy reds and whites from the entire state."

Starting to show a little “tired” (due to the 15.4% alc.?) I would opt to start popping corks sooner than later.

15.4% alc. Don't let the labeled ABV scare you off as this is nicely balanced and in a great spot now and probably for a few more years.

Ripe Asian pear, orange blossom, tangerine juice, pineapple juice, toast, candied ginger, white flowers, powdered sugar, marzipan. Sexy and complex and just keeps evolving in glass.

The Viognier that restarted it all. Classic varietal character and dare I say balanced at 15+%. Opulent and flirtatious but not flabby. Dinner w/ John & Lorraine! #alban #swc

This was from quite a few nights ago, but the main thing I remember was thinking that older Alban viogniers are awesome!

I categorically love Viognier but know almost nothing about it. Nothing to report here other than a mild decant and warming up to ~65F made this really enjoyable with flank steak and mushroom polenta. Yay Alban!

Excellent viognier from John Alban. Lots of honeysuckle on the nose coupled with notes of melon. Medium-plus bodied on the palate with a good (but not lingering) finish. I personally like John's viogniers with a few years of age on them - brings out some awesome secondary flavors that just aren't there in this one yet. I suspect that this will be significantly more interesting in 2-3 years, so I'd recommend holding onto it for now.
