This has softened considerably since my last bottle several years ago. Nose is complex, with earth, cedar, cigar box, and an incense-like note. In the mouth, it’s rich but medium-bodied. The tannins that were so prominent a few years ago have significantly resolved. Entering (finally) its drinking window.

The 2015 ‘Oakville’ Cabernet Sauvignon is showing marvelously at its early stage in development. Needing a one hour decant to fully arouse, the wine slowly reveals ripe dark currants with tar and anise aromatics that take shape in the glass. The palate shows a excellent power and acidity with intense dark fruits, and shades of creme de cassis and Turkish coffee. Enjoyable now in its youth, this will continue to evolve over the next fifteen years. Drink 2019-2033

A bit locked up and muscle-bound on night one. On night 2, it’s still large-framed, but the nose is showing more sweet cassis fruit to go with the smoky graphite and clove. Mouthfilling, with significant amounts of very soft tannin, the plate initially hits with equal amounts of dark fruit and dark gravelly notes, turns a bit peppery and savory in the middle, and as the long finish progresses, it fades into very pure plummy cassis. If the acids were a tad higher and the alcohol a tad lower, this would be close to amazing. As it is, it’s very good, and will be better in 3-5 years.

A little on the fruity side.

You know, I think that there’s an assumption that a really good Cabernet Sauvignon has to come from Opus One, but sometimes you bet on the lesser sibling and all is right in the world.
