Rim to rim color density. Red and black cherries poke through cedar and sweet tobacco on the nose with dark chocolate chunks, plum, prune and date, toasted sesame, cinnamon, rose petal, and cardamom. Chewy tannins that roll satin-smooth initially, then cassis, black currant and licorice flip the script. Superb. Ordinarily I would not open a Dunn so young, but we served this at a tasting yesterday. Not a crime to Open now but better if you can wait. Classic Dunn.

Decant and pour. Nose: enticing perfumed dark fruit, mint, pine, floral, pencil shavings. Taste: creamy, balanced, savory wine with blackberry, milk chocolate, earth, leather, graphite, and a lingering long finish with some slightly grippy tannins. YUM!! No hurry, time to go.

It’s been about a year since my last bottle of the 14 Howell. Comments remain the same. Even with a brief 30 min decant it’s drinking well. Tannins softening nicely, fruit still ripe and strong, well balanced. Will aim to keep trying a bottle each year and see how it evolves.
